Desmond De Silva – Keeping his memory alive the way he wanted us to! – By his wife Phyllis De Silva I know around the world there is a lot of grieving. Grieving for an Entertainer who gave his best … as was his mantra, “the show must go on”. To me, he was a devoted husband, whose happy place was by my side. In the evenings we would sit together in our home in Sydney with our dogs and a glass of red to watch repeats of our favorite sitcoms, his laugher filling my heart. He was always content. In his words, he had “found his happy place”. To my sons and their wives, he was just “Des” who had some quick one-liners and dad jokes that made them smile. They loved him for his kind and loving nature and his ability to make anyone and everyone feel welcome, ...

‘We can’t turn people back’: Religious services wait until all can attend By Josh Dye Anglican churches are keen to avoid “uncomfortable situations” around vaccination status, Archbishop of Sydney Kanishka Raffel says.CREDIT:JAMES BRICKWOOD Source:-smh.com.au Most religious services in Sydney will remain online-only for another two weeks as faith leaders grapple with the state’s public health orders regarding coronavirus that exclude unvaccinated people. Churches, mosques and synagogues can now open and hold services under the NSW road map out of lockdown, but only those fully vaccinated against COVID-19 are meant to attend. Once the 80 per cent Sydney target is reached – likely by October 18 or 25 – then anyone can attend places of worship regardless of their choice to have a vaccine. Anglican Archbishop of Sydney Kanishka Raffel said the majority of the city’s 400 churches would wait until then to reopen. “Some churches will be opening [this Sunday] but ...

Colombo 21 (Castle Hill, Sydney) – by Dr. Harold Gunatillake Transcript: Cooking exotic Sri Lankan foods, is it viewed as culture, or a creation of art? I would say it is both culture and art. Culture is derived from the ancient traditions in Sri Lanka, and the art is the way it is presented which is a creation of the Western world. Newly opened Sri Lankan Restaurant in Castle Hill a popular suburb of Sydney, thickly populated with migrants including Sri Lankans seems to be the ideal convenient spot to visit for the food lovers who love Sri Lankan foods. No worries about parking, plenty of spaces in the basement car park. I am at this newly opened restaurant in Castle Hill called the Colombo 21, and I must say the ambience is superb, and quite spacious compared to most other Asian restaurants. The offerings are plenty to choose from ...

Annual Homeworld Thunder Nation Cup   Cricketers with Afghan and Sri Lankan heritage have the chance to try and follow Sydney Thunder whiz kid Tanveer Sangha’s footsteps by representing their communities in the seventh edition of the Homeworld Thunder Nation Cup. While six communities will be represented in the tournament that’s played in Sydney’s western suburbs during February and March, organisers have especially urged players with Afghan and Sri Lankan backgrounds to register for their team’s upcoming selection trials. Sangha, a former East Hills Boys High student, and regarded by many critics as the ‘find’ of BBL|10 after the 19-year-old’s cunning leg-spin bowling captured 21 wickets, described his representing the Indian community as a 16-year-old as a significant milestone on his path to elite cricket. “I loved playing in the Thunder Nation Cup, it was great fun and an amazing opportunity to play at [Sydney Showground Stadium],” said Sangha, who ...

FIRST NATIONS AT FIRST LIGHT ON AUSTRALIA DAY 2021 IN SYDNEY For the first time on Australia Day, the Sydney Opera House sails have been lit up at dawn with Indigenous art as a poignant recognition of Australia’s First Nations people. These two significant dawn moments set the tone for Australia Day 2021 across NSW with a focus on reflecting and respecting all that makes our country so special. NSW artist, Frances Belle-Parker, was commissioned to create the artwork for the projection on the sails of the Sydney Opera House. Ms Belle-Parker, a proud Yaegl woman, mother and artist from Maclean on the Clarence River, said she is proud to have designed the projection to represent the oldest living culture in the world. “By creating this work, it gave myself the opportunity ...
