I served in the Royal Ceylon Navy from 1953 until the end of 1961, when I had to buy myself out of a twelve year contract with the Force, in order to migrate to Australia. All of us Navy guys had to sign on for twelve years, and then resign for another ten, in order to be eligible for a Government pension. If you were still young enough to serve in the Senior Force, as the Navy was called, you could carry on, of course, but if you wanted to resign from the Navy before your 12 years were complete, you had to pay the Government a certain amount of money equivalent to the years you were about to miss out on.
