National NAIDOC Week will be celebrated from Sunday 2 July – Sunday 9 July 2023. NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee, which was the original name of the organization responsible for organizing the event. The history of NAIDOC Week dates back to the 1920s when Aboriginal rights activist William Cooper, along with other Indigenous leaders, established the Australian Aborigines’ Progressive Association (AAPA). It is an invitation and opportunity for migrant communities such as ours to appreciate the perspective of the First Australians who have lived on and cared for this land since time immemorial. NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee.
