“A PRIYA PEIRIS DOUBLE” – by Des Kelly The Man from Moratuwa, my friend Priya Peiris keeps on, keeping on, with his famous band, the La-Bambas, who still get together, I believe, to have what we musicians term a “Jam-Session”, now and again. With all the unfortunate “goings-on” over there, at the moment, I do know that these meetings of the La-Bambas would now be down to a minimum, but this does not stop this guy from doing what he loves to do, and I have decided to “showcase” him, both solo, and also in a group of other Moratuwa Maestro’s with a double-shot at what they do, best. Shiromi of “Kondanamagena” fame, 50 years celebrity in Canada by Sunil Thenabadu The child singing prodigy Shiromi Fernando, born in year 1960 ‘Baby Shiromi” celebrity domiciled in Canada is planning to commemorate her golden milestone in singing since coming to fame in year 1971 with her ‘kondenamagena’ song recorded for the Sooriya label. The lyrics and music compositions of this song and three other songs ‘Amma Pembara Amma’,’Sakala Bujan”,and Handa Haami’ recorded together in a disc under famous Soorya label which were sold then, as hot cakes at the Children’s book shop. “BAILA, AT IT’S BEST” – By Des Kelly La Bambas, who are proud to call themselves Moratu-kollo”, now sadly minus their leader Brian Fernando who passed, on 6th November, 2013, would have to be, in the opinion of music- collector extraordinaire Jude Goonewardane, in London, and this writer, in Australia, the BEST exponents of what is termed Sri Lankas favourite Party-Music, BAILA. I am proud to say that I started my Music-career in that famous Town of Moratuwa, myself, at the tender age of six, meeting the Original King of Baila, Wally Bastiensz himself, when I was around nine, (Wally was about 18 years older than me), but seeing this very young Lansi-kolla who was so interested in Music, decided to teach me how to sing some baila verses, a few of which were rather ribald, putting it mildly. La Bambas has hit half a century – Semi-centennial soundtrack March 4 was a jubilant day for the lovers in the music world. The La Bambas has hit half a century. The music band organized a historic evening at the Sooriya Village. Collection of Latin American Songs, Calypso and Original Hits by Labambas was launched at the event to coincide with the half century. The CD included Cielito Lindo, Las Mananitas, El Rancho Grande, Melody D’Amor, Sloop John B and a few more tourist promotion songs fused with evergreen Sinhala songs. The first four CDs were handed over as a mark of respect to Yula, the wife of late Brian Fernando, the Leader of the Troop, Major General Harin Perera and Merril Fernando.
