MEMORIES & TRIBUTE TO AN ANTONIAN TEACHER – Mrs Chandra Bandaranaike (1925 -1960) – by Tilak Pananwala    Mrs Chandra Bandaranaike (nee Kulatunga) was a Teacher at St Anthony’s College, Kandy from 1951 to 1960. Her younger brother Cecil Kulatunga now domiciled in Sydney, Australia is a distinguished product of the college passing the University Entrance exam and obtaining a BSc (Eng.) degree from then University of Ceylon, Peradeniya. Mrs Bandaranaike was among the group of excellent Teachers the college was blessed with during this decade.  She hailed from the village of Pujapitiya in the Harispattuwa district from a respected ancestral Kandyan family and had a primary education at the Girl’s High School, Kandy before qualifying as a Trained Teacher and taught History, Geography, Civics & Sinhalese to Form 1 & 2 classes at St Anthony’s. Mysterious Halaba Bridge in Badulla By Arundathie Abeysinghe   This spectacular mysterious steel bridge is located across Uma Oya at Halaba, a small village located near Uma Oya (Oya meaning stream in Sinhala) in *Badulla in close proximity to breathtaking hamlet*Ella. It is 113 meters (372 feet) long. The bridge is built at the widest points of Uma Oya, approximately 91 meters (300 feet) wide and 7-12 meters (25-40 feet) deep.  The two ends of the Bridge are approximately three meters wide (10 feet) and the mid portion is approximately two meters (8 feet) wide. Arthur’s Seat Viewing Deck – lookout point in Kandy City By Arundathie Abeysinghe Arthur’s Seat or Kandy View Point is a mesmerizing lookout point situated in Kandy City. Arthur’s Seat is ranked fifth out of 105 tourist attractions in Kandy. It is situated about 550 meters above sea level, southwest of Kandy Lake, a few meters past Royal Palace Park (Wales Park or Wace Park) at Rajapihilla Mawatha.  According to folklore Mr. Arthur, a British Tea Planter lived in a bungalow during the British Colonial Era above the viewpoint.  Planter Arthur had viewed Kandy City seated on a stone seat under a tree and it was his popular viewpoint. SUJITH MADHUSHANKA – Medical Student – Kandy by Quintus de Zylva   SUJITH has just been selected for entry to the Sri Jayawardnepura Medical Faculty. He was a student at Dharmarajah College in Kandy. He was in the Biology stream and received a scholarship from DAANAL – the Dharmarajah Alumini Association of North America. He was introduced to us by Rev. Buddadatha Thero – a priest at Bahirawakande – Kandy. His father is a retired Army Officer and his mother a housewife. Sujith supported himself by tutoring students in Kandy. He has asked for a laptop or i-pad and we are grateful to a generous donor from Moorabbin who has provided us with one.
