Uduvil Girls’ College Bicentenary – Dr. Thayalan Ambalavanar Tuesday morning (6th February) saw the inaugural function of the Bicentennial celebrations of Uduvil Girls’ College in their college hall. The program was titled ‘Anthizo’ which in Greek means blossom. It was 200 years ago that a young American missionary, Harriet Winslow, started this school which was then called the Female Central School. The first two girl students were little ones who used to peer curiously through the windows of the Mission house. Harriet started teaching them and thus  a great institution was born.It is the oldest boarding school for girls in Asia. Despite the resistance of the community to educating girls, the numbers slowly but steadily increased. Harriet, who suffered many personal losses, herself died sadly at the age of 33. In its 200 year history the school has been served by just ten Principals including the incumbent Ms. Rosanna Kulendran. ...

Pada Yatra 2015 – By Stefan D’silva Recently a friend of mine from Sydney visited Kumana NP and the topic of the annual pilgrimage arose.  That prompted me to revisit these images that have never been released before. The pilgrimage is quite a spectacle of devotion and faith and people walk for many days- they sleep in the jungle and plod on to Kataragama to fulfill their vows. The age of so many defies many a stereotypical narrative on the health of the aged. Some commence the walk in Jaffna – many join the walk from Panama and other locations along the East Coast. Either way it is a formidable journey, carrying dry rations, coconut scrapers and kids. As far as I know it happens every August. I have minimized the text  and kept it to one sentence per page  – as they say “a picture is worth a thousand ...

Stupas of Delft Island – evidence of earliest human habitation – By Arundathie Abeysinghe Known as “Neduntivu” or “Nedunthivu” by residents in Jaffna, Delft Island is commonly referred as “Delft Island”, inherited from Dutch Colonials during their rule in Jaffna. Although, Delft Island is a vast island, it is mostly uninhabited. At the northwestern coast of Delft Island, there are ruins of three ancient Buddhist stupas (dagobas) known as “Cholan ruins.” Two stupas are of medium or small size, yet the largest stupa has a circumference of 32 meters. Their ground walls are restored by the Department of Archaeology. Buddhist ruins on the Island were first reported in 1832, by a person utilizing the pseudonym “Pen” (PENN) to “Colombo Journal” newspaper.
