Dasun Shanaka Great Captain and Sportsman – “Not only cricket, but other sports should also be on top” – by Kithsiri Senadeera I have the highest regard for our Sri Lanka’s cricket captain Dasun Shanaka  not only because he lead a young team to win the T20 Asia Cup under extremely difficult conditions, but the statement he made at the post-match press conference after winning the Asia Cup. Dasun Shanaka said “Not only Cricket, but other sports should also be on top. But the media always speak only about cricket. It is a big thing if we talk about other games and bring them up,”   We all should admire his selflessness statement. Instead of asking for more benefits for his own sport, he is requesting to support other sports as well. I am touched by his bravery to make such a statement and his social conscience and empathy. As far as I am aware this is ...

PETERITES END THEIR 2022 RUGBY SEASON IN STYLE – by Joe Paiva I am very elated to hear the news of the triumphant Peterite Team. The phoenix rises from the Ashes. Lazarus rises from his tomb. However one swallow does not  necessarily mean it is Spring followed by Summer. The SPC victory,  while joyous should be analysed in its entirety without fear or favour. What did SPC learn? Reality check. Where to from here? Continuous Improvement  How can  SPC replicate that performance.   Sustainability  Was every single players contribution valued. Coaching Staff. Supporters.  Parent Community.  Not to be the best at any cost Rather the best SPC can be. Enjoy the game as true sportsmen WIN, DRAW or LOSE. Enjoy the journey rather than be totally focused on the destination. Trophies, Champion, Prize Money, Ego. Let humanity be the judge. In 5 to 10 years it would be a distant memory. After ...

Sri Lanka in majestic win to take Asia Cup – By Dhammika Ratnaweera Source : dailynews The Sri Lanka team made a superb team effort to win the sixth Asia Cup cricket title when they beat Pakistan by 23 runs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium yesterday. The game was a do-or-die battle for both Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Sri Lanka chased the target and recorded their victory on Friday with three overs to spare. However, Sri Lanka batted first after losing the toss and made a comfortable total of 170/6 as they defended that total with a superb fighting spirit to clinch the title for the sixth time under the full capacity of Dubai grounds while most of them were Pakistani supporters ended up disappointed with back to back defeats from Sri Lanka. HISTORY OF TEA AND CRICKET IN SRILANKA – By Dr. Gnana Sankaralingam (Excerpts from the book by David Colin-Thome) Following British colonization, coffee had been introduced to the contours and elevated central districts by 1830. However from 1860, coffee industry was progressively decimated by the coffee rust disease. In 1867 when the Scotsman James Taylor cleared and planted tea in 21 acres at Loolecondera, its implications could not have been realised at that time, which later created an unprecedented prominence for the country. When tea industry flourished planters and executives employed in the trade, contributed to the development of cricket. Though the first cricket club (Colombo Cricket Club) was formed in 1832, it was not until four decades later that the game finally took root in the country. In some way the period in which tea was introduced, coincided with establishment and organization of cricket further, steadily increasing the popularity ...

Transformation of Galle Face green  by Dr Harold Gunatillake The promenade was initially laid out in 1859 by Governor Sir Henry George Ward,  although the original Galle Face Green extended over a much larger area than is seen today.  The Galle Face Green was initially used for horse racing and as a golf course but was also  used for cricket, polo, football, tennis, and rugby.   The Dutch initially laid out the Galle Face Green to enable their cannons to a strategic line of  fire against the Portuguese. One version of how the name Galle Face is derived is that it is  from the original Dutch name for the fortifications, in that the gateway which gave access to  the Colombo Fort was called the Gal Gate, as it faced southwards to Galle and faas means  front, so it means in front of the fortification that encountered toward Galle. Another version ...
