Respect across age, gender and cultures – by Charles Schokman   “ Every human being and nation, irrespective of their power or strength, has the right to be respected. Respect is defined differently by different people and cultures. In our video we try to bring in as many individuals from different ages, genders and countries to get a better understanding of the word respect. This is very important to build emotional and cultural intelligence. Respect has many definitions: – Respect is an unassuming resounding force, the stuff that equity and justice are made of. – It means being treated with consideration and esteem and to be willing to treat people similarly. – It means to have a regard for other peoples’ feelings listening to people and hearing them, i.e. giving them one’s full attention. – Even more importantly, respect means treating one with dignity. Respect is the first positive step ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – Drinking from my saucer – by Charles Schokman Why is it critical for us to recognize the blessings that are overflowing from our personal cups into our saucers? Simply, it is God’s Wish that we acknowledge His hand in all things and we need to offer our thanks to Him. This poem has been very inspirational to me because its message is not to be casually thankful for the obvious, rather, it points out the vast opportunities we have to acknowledge and be filled by the ever-flowing abundance of God’s love for us.  Our imperfections set our own limitations on gratitude. We might be guilty of thanking Him for a limited amount of blessings because we have failed to put wide-angle lenses on our soul to see the vast quantity of blessings around us to really be thankful for. Some expressions of gratitude fall short of the ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – He Knows My Name – Charles Schokman The sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. –John 10:3 When we attended a large church, we learned new things, joined a great small group, and enjoyed the worshipful music. But I didn’t realize for a long time that I missed something—the pastor had no idea who I was. Because of the thousands in attendance, I understood that it would be impossible for him to know each person by name. Then, when we began attending a much smaller church, I received a handwritten welcome note from the pastor. After a few more weeks, Pastor Josh was calling me by name and chatting with me about my recent surgery. It felt good to be personally acknowledged. All of us have a desire to be known—especially by God. A song by Tommy Walker, “He Knows ...

AN APPRECIATION –  Enjoy life whilst you can before it is too late – by Charles Schokman It is with deep sorrow that I report the death of Fred (affectionately known as Freddie) La Brooy.  He and his parents were neighbours and good family friends of ours in Sri Lanka, spanning a period of 81 years. We came to know each other during World War 2, well remembering Sunday 6th April 1942 when the Japanese raided Colombo. We were a close knit family and hold many memories, both happy and sad that came our way on life’s journey. I remember Freddie as a handsome young lad very energetic who loved his sports and Therese for her beauty as she was known as the “Belle of  Dematagoda.” This bonding continued with Fred, his wife Therese and family even after we migrated to Australia. The sad news that penetrates my heart most ...

AN INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST 2023. – By Charles Schokman FOOD FOR THOUGHT—How True REACHING  A  POINT  IN  LIFE  WHERE  WEALTH  MEANS  NOTHING.                     J D Rockefeller John D Rockefeller was once the richest man in the world. The first billionaire in the world. By age 25, he controlled one of the largest oil refineries in the US. By age 31, he had become the world’s largest oil refiner. By age 38, he commanded 90% of the oil refined in the U.S. By 50, he was the richest man in the country.  As a young man, every decision, attitude, and relationship was tailored to create his personal power and wealth.  But at the age of 53, he became ill. His entire body became racked with pain and he lost all of his hair. In complete agony, the world’s only billionaire could buy anything he wanted, but he ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – Keep me travelling along with you – by Charles Schokman This is a children’s song about new beginnings. It was written by English historian, folk-singer and song-writer Sydney Bertram Carter (1915-2004) – author of Lord of the Dance. It was first published in 1971 by Stainer and Bell Ltd. The lyrics of this journeying hymn by Daniel Shiells with its bouncy tune are often sung with passion and meaning in rousing school assemblies. Keep me travelling along with you.  “As I travel through the bad and good, Keep me travelling the way I should; Where I see no way to go You’ll be telling me the way, I know.” When Jesus refers to himself as the way, the truth, and the life, he is giving us a better way to live our lives through him. He is showing us that through following him daily in faith, he will lead us ...

GROWING OLD GRACEFULLY  – Remember your ageing friends and relatives – by Charles Schokman I’m still here     My looks are nothing special, My face reveals my age, My body shows some wear and tear, And my energy’s not the same.   Too often my memory fails me, And I lose things all the time. One minute I know what I plan to do, And the next it may just slip my mind.   I try hard to avoid my mirror. There are things I would rather not see, And even those times when I just catch a glimpse, I can no longer recognize me.     The things I used to do with ease Can now cause aches and pains, And the quality of the things I do Will never be quite the same. I always compare my older self To those younger versions of me, And I know I’m wasting ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – LOVE HAS NO LIMITS – by Charles Schokman “Love knows no limit to its endurance, no end to its trust, no fading of its hope; it can outlast anything. It is, in fact, the one thing that still stands when all else has fallen.”  (1 Corinthians 13:7-8)     A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE. There are many wonderful gifts I’ve received in my lifetime.  The perfect hand-sewn dress from my mother. Fingerprint painted pots from my kids. Handwritten cards from my husband. But, for so many reasons, this gift is among the most priceless I’ve ever received. Claver, my husband carved an original woodblock design, then printed it in his college printmaking class, and gave it to me for Mother’s Day last year. The artwork was exquisite, and the hours he put into it meant so much to me.  But, the even greater value was the message behind the words. ...
