{PeteriteNET:584} DEATH OF THE OLDEST KNOWN PETERITE IN SRI LANKA

Jaya Peiris receiving a memento

Mr. Jaya Peiris or W P Jayaratne as he preferred to call himself, the oldest known Peterite in Sri Lanka, has passed away yesterday. His cremation is to take place today (Saturday, 1st June at 4.30 p.m. – crematorium not identified).

Mr. Jayaratne (99) was the oldest Peterite who contributed to our Centenary Publication, in 2022. His article brought back memories of an era at St. Peter’s that many of us were unaware of.

I had the privilege of meeting him through Mr. Gerry de Mel, an erstwhile President of our OBU and presenting to him a complimentary copy of the Centenary Publication.

A valued certificate issued to him by our first Rector, Rev. Fr. Nicholas Perera, which he shared with us is also published here. Interestingly this certificate is issued in Dehiwela where College was located in 1943 (during the war years) when it functioned from the premises of St. Mary’s, Dehiwela.

May he attain Nibbana.
