Tribute talk for Prof Weeramantry at Monash Law by Tony Anghie

March 2018 – Tuesday 6, 6.00 pm to 7.00 pm
Tribute Talk: TOWARDS ONE WORLD: a tribute – by Prof Tony Anghie

Towards One World’: the Vision of C.G.Weeramantry

In this special event to honour the life of Emeritus Professor Christie Weeramantry AM, Professor Tony Anghie will delve into the themes of Christie’s jurisprudence and his larger vision of the world as they developed from his time as a lawyer and Judge in Sri Lanka, through his years at Monash University to his work on the International Court of Justice.

Tony will focus particularly on two issues that Christie wrote about extensively – environmental protection and the proliferation of nuclear weapons. These writings illustrate some of the enduring themes of Christie’s work: his view of a universal international law that incorporated non-Western traditions; and his belief that the law must address the needs of the people it was designed to serve.
