SRI LANKA NEWS (JULY 2022) Compiled by Victor Melder Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) says the number of tourists coming to Sri Lanka has decreased by 60 percent in last month. Director General of SLTDA Dhammika Wijesinghe said this situation has arisen in view of the crisis atmosphere in the country. According to SLTDA, 106,500 tourists arrived in the island in March 2022 and the tourist arrivals have decreased to 32,856 in the month of June Tourism Development Authority Director General Dhammika Wijesinghe said. July and August are the two months when most tourists visit the island. During those two months, the tourists mostly visit the eastern part of the country. Apart from that more tourists tend to visit Kandy area in August. SRI LANKA NEWS (JUNE 2022) Compiled by Victor Melder Asia Siyaka (AS) tea market report for sale no. 21, covering the period May 31- June 1, indicates a production drop of nearly 10 million kilos compared to 2021. Results for the year up to the above dates, the report said, was 111.5 million kilos. Comparatively, for the same period in 2021, production recorded was 122.25 million kilos, indicating a minus variant for the comparative period of about 10 million kilos. The formalized plantation sector was not on hand to corroborate these results. However, tea smallholders and private tea factory owners, when contacted, confirmed a drop in production. It should also be noted that tea smallholders are responsible for 75 per cent tea production. Among the major factors that accounted for these results was the ill- advised decision by the current administration to ban imported fertilizer and the lack of weedicides. ...

 SRI LANKA CRICKET NEWS (APRIL 2022) Compiled by Victor Melder Sri Lanka national team will tour Bangladesh for a two-match Test series from May 15.The first Test will be held from May 15 to 19 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium (ZACS) in Chattogram (formerly known as Chittagong) while the second Test will commence from May 23 to 27 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Minpuir, Dhaka. The series will be played under the ICC World Test Championship. The two-day practice match will be played prior to the Test series on May 11, 12 at MA Aziz Stadium, Chattogram.                   SRI LANKA NEWS (MARCH 2022) Compiled by Victor Melder Sri Lanka’s inflation, as measured by the change in the Colombo Consumers’ Price Index (CCPI) increased to 15.1 percent in February 2022 from 14.2 percent in January 2022, the Department of Census and Statistics reported Monday. The CCPI for all items for the month of February 2022 increased to 160.1 from 158.4 in January 2022. The Year on Year inflation of Food Group increased to 25.7 percent in February 2021 from 25.0 percent in January 2022 and the Year on Year inflation of Non Food Group increased to 10.1 percent in February 2021 from 9.2 percent in the previous month. For the month of February 2021, on year‐to‐year basis, contribution to inflation by food commodities was 8.23 percent and the contribution of Non Food items was 6.85 percent.
