SRI LANKA CRICKET NEWS Complied by Victor Melder (FEBRUARY 2023) The Department of Sports Development (DSD) has decided to call for nominations through a newspaper advertisement for the 2023 Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee. This followed a high-level discussion led by Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe with the participation of officials of the National Sports Council and the National Sports Selection Committee (NSSC) on Monday.  The newspaper notice inviting nominations to the Cricket Selection Committee will be published in the next few days, Amal Edirisooriya, Director General of DSD told the ‘Daily Mirror’.  Since there are issues with regard to cricket selections, NSSC Chairman General Shavendra Silva and NSSC member Sanath Jayasuriya said that henceforth there should be transparency in the appointment of the Cricket Selection Committee.  Under the previous system, the executive committee nominated 10 names to the Sports Minister out of which five or seven members were appointed to the ...

SRI LANKA CRICKET NEWS – DECEMBER 2022 –  By Victor Melder Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe has appointed a six-member Fact Finding Committee to inquire not only about the players’ behaviour during the T20 World Cup in Australia but also to ascertain whether officials showed “real concerns” for the team members. Ranasinghe said, “We have appointed a six-member committee to report on the recent issues. The committee will be chaired by the Former High Court Judge Kusala Sarojini. One former cricketer is also in the committee.” The other members of the committee are former Ministerial Secretary Kingsley Fernando, Retired CID DIG Sudath Nagahamulla, Retired Rear Admiral Ananda Peiris, former cricketer Nalin de Alwis and Attorney-at-Law Shalani Roshana.”No time-frame is given to the committee but will ask the members to expedite the process.” The minister also expressed his concern over the way issues were handled regarding Chamika Karunaratne. SRI LANKA NEWS – DECEMBER 2022 – By Victor Melder Sri Lanka owed Chinese lenders $7.4 billion – nearly a fifth of its public external debt – by the end of last year, calculations by the China Africa Research Initiative (CARI) showed, an estimate higher than many others. The figure was above the “often-quoted 10 to 15 percent figures,” the study said, adding a “significant portion” of the country’s debt to China had been recorded under lending to state-owned enterprises rather than central government. Crisis-hit Sri Lanka is in the midst of a debt restructuring after years of economic mismanagement combined with the COVID-19 pandemic saw the country plunge into the worst economic crisis since independence from Britain in 1948 and tip into default. SRI LANKA NEWS (NOVEMBER 2022) Compiled by Victor Melder Political parties, trade unions, mass organizations and student unions held a protest march today against the actions of the government today (November 02) in Colombo.A group of politicians, including Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, also participated in the protest march organized under the theme “Let’s stand up against repression and economic pressure”. The protest march started from Maradana near the Elphinstone Theater and proceeded towards the Fort Railway Station. When the protestors arrived in the Colombo Fort area, the march was interrupted by a barricade of police officers near the floating market in Pettah and a heated situation arose between the protesters and the police. SRI LANKA NEWS (OCTOBER 2022) Compiled by Victor Melder Inflation in capital Colombo, as measured by the year-on-year (YoY) change in the Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI), rose to 69.8 percent in September, from 64.3 percent in August, as the crisis-struck nation continues to battle with exorbitant prices. According to the government’s statistics office, both food and non-food categories drive September’s inflation. Food inflation increased to 94.9 percent in September, from 93.7 percent in August while non-food inflation surged to 57.6 percent, from 50.2 percent. Within the food category, increases were observed in the prices of fruits, chicken and wheat flour. However, the prices of rice, dhal and sugar decreased during the month.
