“WHAT HAPPENS NOW”? by Des Kelly It is a phrase I hate using, “I told you so”, BUT I did, several times, when I wrote, specifically about the present Australian Cricket team, their “attitude” on the cricket field, where, personalities who would make any Aussie, & of course, any Lankan/Aussie PROUD to even be associated with, great guys & gals, Australians, all, are typically friendly, caring people with families, living Aussie-lives (at home). change dramatically, the moment they “hit the cricket ground”, whenever or wherever. I will concentrate on the “guys” here, because this is the “breaking-news” at the moment, these same guys who would go out of their way to “help” ANYONE who needed help, any day of the week, would be the same guys who would be the most preferred, as co-fighters in a war-trench, would be the best “mates” in any “pub”, undergo a transformation on a ...

The Cricket Australia governance plot thickens Lessons in corporate governance – An opinion by Aubrey Joachim Last Saturday the whole world were given a front row view of how ‘not to cheat’ by apparently three musketeers of the Australian cricket team. This morning the whole world was given a lesson in how not to run a high profile organisation when the CEO of Cricket Australia gave a pathetic display in front of the world’s media. It made Mark Zuckerberg seem a star when quizzed about FB’s recent failures. And this is the problem with all sporting organisations which are today massive business organisations – lack of quality governance and managerial leadership. What the CEO did not realise is that his performance only ratifies what has been the root cause all along – governance failures from the very top. It is said that a fish rots from the head. In addition ...

Good governance is equally applicable in sports – fall-out from the great Aussie ball tampering scandal – An opinion by Aubrey Joachim Regulators of the game, Prime Ministers, sponsorship stakeholders and the sporting public are all concerned and disturbed by a little piece of yellow tape shoved down the pants of a cricketer. Seems pretty bizarre, right? However, when such an incident has virtually brought a country to its knees by embarrassing it in front of the whole world and potentially has multi-million dollar impacts across a number of fronts it is a serious concern. How could such a situation have arisen in a space where Australia has always considered itself to be world leaders – not only in the context of its ‘perceived’ superiority on the field of play but also the moral guardians of the spirit of the game? In Australia cricket is not merely a sport but ...

SHAME, SHAME, SHAME, AUSTRALIA – By Trevine Rodrigo (Melbourne)   Australian Cricket hit new depths with the ball tampering scandal in South Africa and any excuse to cover up the happenings in the African sub-continent will only worsen the way the ‘gentleman’s game’ will be looked at from now on after their unsavory instigation that dragged the sport to its lowest ebb.  By Stephen Smith’s and Cameron Bancroft’s own admission to using desperate and extreme measures to change the course of the game, there is now a storm enveloping one of the most popular sport in the world putting the ICC under the pump to deal with it with the full force of its power to ensure that it will never be tolerated in the future.  The Australian ploy to gain unfair advantage over the South Africans is unforgivable as much as it will be a stain on Cricket for ...

Ball Tampering: Calls for captain Steve Smith to resign after Ball Tampering confession Ball Tampering: Australian captain Steve Smith says The leadership group knew about it’ Ball Tampering: Calls for Smith to resign after Ball Tampering confession – Australia cricket team admit cheating against South Africa after being caught ball-tampering – Australia captain Steve Smith has admitted that his side deliberately tampered with the ball during the third Test against South Africa after batsman Cameron Bancroft was seen taking out an object from his pocket while shining the ball. The incident, which has tarnished Australia’s reputation on the international stage, took place during South Africa’s second innings and the International Cricket Council [ICC] has already charged Bancroft, with Smith admitting that it was a decision taken by the “leadership group” within the team. “The leadership group knew about it, we spoke about it at lunch,” Smith told a news conference. ...

“CRICKET- CAPERS” by Des Kelly Breaking News. The C.E.O. of Cricket Australia, James Sutherland comes on “Aunty” A.B.C. for a “Press-Conference” regarding the Cricket-Capers going on at the moment in South Africa. “Cricket Capers in Cape-Town”, rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it ?. What I would like to know is WHY this C.E.O. was made to “appear” on the most important Television Station, in  Australia, the A.B.C. , immediately after I had enjoyed some beautiful choirs on “Songs of Praise”, for a press conference on which he could not give the Pressmen present, any bloody PRESS at all. O.k.,o.k., we are in a new-fangled World, at the moment, but, for crying out loud!, there is still a bit of distance between bloody Cape Town & Canberra. Give the man a chance to get all the “caper-details” in a couple of days, after two other “Reps” (just sent to S.Africa), get ...

This time at the community centre at West Pennant Hills. And once again they were fortunate in having the chaplain to the Sri Lankan community in New South Wales and prefect of games at College, Father Chaminda Wanigasena, as the celebrant. A feature of the well-attended Mass was the fervent participation and singing of the hymns. The prayers by Kumar Eliyathamby, Dylan Tavarayen, Romel Pieris and Eddie Correra gave thanks and remembered the past Rectors and teachers together with the present staff of the College. Young and old celebrated birthdays and the company of friends. The dinner catered by Dish tickled more than a few tastebuds and earned some plaudits. The music ...
