DESMOND KELLY

Occupational nicknames – by Des Kelly Totally different “little piece” coming into e’Lanka via our good friend Keith Bennett, via one of his good friends Ralph Baker, obviously. As Ralph puts it, whoever has had a steady job in Oz., would have had the memorable occasion of meeting up/with one of the characters mentioned. Thank you Keith (and Ralph, of course), for this most amusing “post” on Occupational nicknames. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka.   Occupational nicknames EVERY WORKPLACE IN AUSTRALIA HAS ONE THESE CHARACTERS ‍️ Under the headline Nicknames for Co-workers, it lists the titles applied to annoying colleagues and their bad habits. From “the sensor light” to “the bushranger”, the list seems to have covered just about every kind of police workplace pest. But, let’s face it, anyone who has ever held down a job has been stuck with some or all of these characters. They are: G-spot: you can never ...

Video from MKS – Melanie Oesch – The Queen Of Yodelling – by Desmond Kelly. Something different again, from Keith Benett. For anyone who thinks that yodeling is just a hillbilly pastime, think again. It is one of the most difficult aspects of singing. To reach this falsetto range, with the power necessary to keep a song on the  same level as normally sung, cannot be accomplished by too many Vocalists. I loved this effort and decided that all e’Lanka members would love it too, so here we go, yodelling our way to Hillbilly Heaven. Please do not try it, if you cannot sing, even in the bathroom. I would not want anyone to choke. Please enjoy this video. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. ...

“OLD FOLKS AT HOME” – by Des Kelly We often use the phrase, the good old days, and they certainly were, as far as I can remember. This post might well have already been out on e’Lanka, but it deserves a repeat for all us oldies who have quite possibly forgotten the original posting Thank you, Keith Bennett for sending it in. I have added an old musical backdrop to this story too, so please enjoy. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief). e’Lanka. ...

“DISTRUST ALL PUBLIC TRUSTEES” – by Des Kelly Very recently, I watched “4 Corners” on the ABC Television Channel, only to be shocked into realizing what our so-called Government/s Guardian & Public Trustees are up to, and have been, for quite a while, around Australia, as a whole. Thereby, my Angry/Sad Title for this particular “Post”. I am so fed-up with what is happening in this Country right now, & would like to firstly, congratulate ABC Channel 2 for it’s fearless coverage of so many different “true stories” of this nature, especially, stories that other Commercial Television Stations would not touch, with a mile-long barge-pole. I have decided that this particular introduction on my part will suffice, as far as my e’Lanka readers are concerned, but here is the “link” to the 4 Corners program which is a “must-see” for the Public in general. Please watch this, if you are ...

“WE LIVE & LEARN” – by Des Kelly Once again, something different from Keith Bennett, via Franklyn, so my thanks go out to both. Reading posts like this, makes one feel that however old we are, there is nothing to stop us from experiencing the fact that, no matter who we are, WE LIVE & LEARN. “MONKEY-MEN” – by Des Kelly With the longest name in “career” history, Timothy White, better known as PALEOANTHROPOLOGIST Tim White, an Ace in the field of paleoanthropology in America, (where else)??, has set out to discover where we human monkeys evolved from. Tim has obviously put in a great deal of study in order to earn himself this astounding career-path, but Keith Bennett, who sent us this story, and myself, have not had to study paleoanthropology-period, just look around us, to notice the abundance of monkeys among us, and not necessarily around the Dehiwala Zoo, in Colombo, (Kolomba, as it is now known). Let me thank Keith for sending eLanka this story regarding Monkey-Men,:with no monkey-business intended, whatsoever. However, a serious “Thank-you” to Tim White as well, for pointing out the fact that we live and learn, As time goes by, What a wonderful world this is, Monkey-Men & all. ...

VALE’ SHANE WARNE – By Des Kelly It is nearly 2am, Saturday the 5th of March, 2022, & whether this is true or untrue, I haven’t a clue, the shocking news has just come thru :- just 52 years old, and already sadly “gone”, one of the greatest “spin bowlers”in the World,  SHANE WARNE.  As I sit here, in absolute shock, this is almost unbelievable, but now confirmed, and, so to his family, friends & millions of fans, I would like to say, we do share our sadness with all of you today. Rest in peace now, Legend. May the soft green turf you knew so well, lie gently over you. Desmond Kelly, for, & on behalf of ALL Sri Lankans who love their Cricket, and especially from e’Lanka, around the Globe, FAREWELL SHANE WARNE.           Des Kelly Editor-in-chief eLanka ...

“CRICKET-COMMENTS”-by Des Kelly Sent in to e’Lanka by Keith Bennett who never ever fails to “spin-up” a satisfactory yarn for each and every Sri Lankan who loves Cricket (I am still looking for one who doesn’t), so, thank you for this one, Keith. As I have said before, and reiterate for the umpteenth time, Cricket is only a GAME, and, like any other game, you WIN some, and LOSE some. Sri Lanka is on a losing curve at the moment, but hold on to your caps, for the tide to turn shortly, and we can cheer our team onto victory, no matter which team they are up against. In the meantime, let us just say “good luck, guys, don’t forget to keep on, keeping on, for old Sri Lanka, you are a great team, no matter what !!. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) eLanka. ...

“THE SOUND OF SILENCE” The truly adequate title of a recording “hit” of it’s era, by Simon & Garfunkel, and the story behind the song, sent in to us at e’Lanka, so a very big “Thank you” to Charles Schokman from all our readers who fully understand the value of any interesting story/stories such as these. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. A Grim Reminder & The Sound Of Silence A humane act  of Today I read a very beautiful story, which I decided to share. It is the story of a poor boy, an American of a Jewish family, from Buffalo, who wins a scholarship at Columbia University. There, he befriends a boy who turned out to be a great friend, and his roommate. But in his freshman year of college, watching a baseball game, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, he went blind.  The doctor said it was conjunctivitis ...
