“PARADISE REGAINED” – by Des Kelly   Enough is enough. Everybody realized, not too long ago, that Sri Lanka was indeed a Paradise well suited to her people in general. Then SOMETHING happened !, and it wouldn’t take Albert Einstein to figure out what it was. The situation began to deteriorate from various angles, coming down to what could be called “Paradise Lost”. Now, one of their BEST Entertainers, my good friend Rukshan Perera sincerely wants to bring back this Paradise ...

“LANKAN LAMPTRAYS” – by Des Kelly It was just while ago that we featured the original Lamprias on e’ Lanka with pride (and mouths watering), at the same time, now, my dear friend Victor Melder has forwarded what could well be termed the Lankan version of this superb dish, complete with the culinary skills required at present, in a Country that is right now facing dire difficulties in feeding themselves at all. It has taken this simple Couple a determined effort to set up an “eatery”featuring what they proudly call “Lamptrays”, and with the shortages of nearly everything to do with cooking a tasty Lankan dish, Naadira J., and her husband must be fully congratulated for setting up “Lamptrays” in 2021. It does not take too much of an imagination to figure out that it has to be so very much more difficult at present, to carry on with their ...

The HMS Ceylon was built in Glasgow – by Des Kelly It seems that our esteemed contributor to e’Lanla, Keith Bennett was somewhat surprised to realize that there was indeed a Ship named after our Island in the sun. Well Keith, there was such a Ship, and also, before the Royal Ceylon Navy was “born”, some of our worthy Sailors actually served on her. These individuals went under the title of the Ceylon Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve (C.R.N.V.R.), and most of them transferred to the Royal Ceylon Navy, which was established on the 9th of December, 1950, after the Navy Act was passed by the British, for the formation of what I always prefer to call “The Senior Force”, or the Royal Ceylon Navy. A few years later, the Royal Ceylon Navy was presented with our first real Ship (also from Britain), a Minesweeper, originally named H.M.S. Flying Fish, immediately ...

Now, one of their BEST Entertainers, my good friend Rukshan Perera sincerely wants to bring back this Paradise and because I was also born in “My Lovely Island Home”, I would love to join Rukshan BRING BACK PARADISE, just to see “PARADISE REGAINED”. Here’s hoping we can do this together, Ruki, Both of us still love out Motherland, and this will never change.   Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. ...

“THE PRICE OF RICE” – by Des Kelly Definitely not nice, is the price of rice AND other foodstuff, so very important for everyone in Sri Lanka to even exist. It is almost impossible for anyone to share the sorry details of what is really happening there, at the moment, so, my thanks go out to Charley Schokman for sending out this true story. This will give e’Lankans everywhere, a chance to see how our homeland is struggling at the moment. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. How do they survive? “A VIDEO TO WATCH” – by Des Kelly   Sung by the man who wrote the sing, Kris Kristofferson, backed by dozens of other Country Music Artistes, if this video does not bring a tear to your eye, I would be very surprised indeed. It was both written and recorded in 1972 by K.K.on an album titled “Jesus was a Capricon” and went on to be the biggest hit in his career. This beautiful Country Gospel Song was inspired by another, with practically the same title, “Help me, Lord”, written by another Country Star, Larry Gatlin, and recorded together with the future wife of Kristofferson, who was the beautiful Rita Coolidge. ...

“PLANTERS PERSONIFIED” – by Des Kelly   From way back when, it was understood, that, to be a Planter in Ceylon was indeed, top lucrative employment in what was always classified as  a “classy” job. I have to say that I really do not know too much about “Coffee Planters”, but did have an Uncle (God rest his soul), who was the Superintendant on a Tea plantation in Warakapola, who lived like a king, in a beautiful, large home, complete with many “Domestic-aids”, at beck and call. As part of the family, we did spend some holidays with him, my Aunt, and a couple or three Cousins, and I could not help but notice the daily routine of this Planter-personified. His day would start very early each morning, as he would “attend” his plantation which consisted of many acres of lush green tea plants, already being looked after by mostly ...

“HELP ME”!! – by Des Kelly Sometimes it seems that the BEST there is, passes you by. This almost happened to me, until my brother Ian, now resident in Sri Lanka sent me this video of Eloise Saayman  singing a Country Gospel Song that I had heard many times before, sung superbly by Gene Watson, the Texas-based Country Icon, a song with, as simple a title, as anyone could think of, which was “Help me”. After hearing Gene sing this song, I did try to find a comparison to his version to no avail, until quite suddenly this version appeared in the messenger column of my ipad, courtesy my brother. I have to admit that I took hardly any notice of this latest message, being extremely busy with my Editorial work for e’Lanka, finally deciding to give ear to what this pretty bespectacled lass had in store for me, and ...
