DESMOND KELLY

Our Generation – by Des Kelly This time, from “Keiths-Squared”, with thanks to, firstly, Keith Ockersz and then to Keith Bennett, this, both interesting & revealing portrait on what it was like, during the good old days, especially in Ceylon then, & Sri Lanka now. Let’s not waste time, Des., let’s get onto it. If this happens to be a repeat, then, it’s a repeat worth repeating. Desmond Kelly (Editor-in-Chief) e’ Lanka. >       *WE ARE A GENERATION WHO* >           *WILL NEVER COME BACK* >       ———————————————— >                        May 2022 > > ⚄ A generation who *walked to school* and then walked back. > ⚄ A generation who *went to school* by *bus/train* and came back. > ⚄ A generation who did their *homework alone* to get out of the house *to play in the street.* > ⚄ A generation who ...

“IN A NUTSHELL” – by Des Kelly   Famous American Actor Humphrey Bogart was born on Monday January 23rd 1899, died on January 14th 1957, aged just 57+. However, Warner Brothers Pictures claimed that Bogart was born on Christmas day, 1899, in order to romanticize his background. Oscar Wilde, Irish playwright & poet (Oct.16th, 1854- Nov. 30th 1900),changed his birth year- 1856 Like his Character Dorian Gray, Wilde was vain about his personal appearance, and feared becoming old. Top Country Music Star Merle Haggard, whose music sits somewhere on the moon today, had an older brother, Francis, with whom he had fallen out for a long period. This was a little too late, but soon after Francis passed away, Merle wrote a song dedicated to him, titled “Listening to the wind” Merle sings this song, as only he can, and listening to the wind is an important lesson learned. Desmond ...

“A PRIYA PEIRIS DOUBLE” – by Des Kelly    The Man from Moratuwa, my friend Priya Peiris keeps on, keeping on, with his famous band, the La-Bambas, who still get together, I believe, to have what we musicians term a “Jam-Session”, now and again. With all the unfortunate “goings-on” over there, at the moment, I do know that these meetings of the La-Bambas would now be down to a minimum, but this does not stop this guy from doing what he loves to do, and I have decided to “showcase” him, both solo, and also in a group of other Moratuwa Maestro’s with a double-shot at what they do, best. I have not seen the “Keeping up with the Joneses song, but did hear Priya’s solo on “The bliss of a kiss”. Of one thing, I am certain. Anybody wanting to do a “cover” of this song, will have to ...

“THE BAILA-BEAT” -by Des Kelly Sent in by our good friend Charles Schokman, here is the BEST exposure of the Baila-beat with a difference. Cannot possibly identify the dancers, but I am almost certain that the music comes from The Gypsies, as the front-man sounds very much like the late, great Sunil, leader of the famous band from Moratuwa. Possibly, e’Lanka has publicised this before, but this is well worth a repeat anyway, so here goes. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’ Lanka. ...

“HOT, OFF THE PRESS” – by Des Kelly With due thanks to my friend Jude Goonewardane, Collector/Keeper of ALL Musical Extravaganzas emanating from olde Ceylon, Sri Lanka, and finally, from abroad, where Nimal Mendis, God rest his soul, composed this song to promote Air Lanka, a few years ago. The general public did not hear this song, unless they were on a flight of the said Airline. This was what we would term, a strictly promotional song, until Jude decided to install it on You-Tube, simply to give us all the chance to reminisce about this highly talented Icon, in Nimal, who also sings his song. Once again, thank you Jude, for giving me the chance of promoting yet another Songwriter from My Lovely Island Home. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’ Lanka. ...

“SAMOA-SILASILA” – by Des Kelly Watching the above, on an early Sunday morning, made me realize, beyond any doubt, that “MUSIC” is still, and always will be, a total necessacity of life, for most of us, who enjoy this most amazing five-letter word, no matter who, ‘or where we are, whether we live in the proverbial Mansion on the hill,  or even on the Streets anywhere, as unfortunately, so many of the sad, homeless, these days, are forced to do. Reminiscing, as I find myself doing now, in what is sardonically termed “the departure lounge”, I often think about those of us who started life in the beautiful little Island of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), who did not possess all those fancy radiograms or even radios, of any sort, but did not miss listening to the old Redifussion broadcasts, gifted to us, ex-Radio Ceylon, on simple square wooden boxes also ...

“Country Medley”- by Des Kelly A latter-day Country Duo, I had never seen before, suddenly “turns-up” on You-tube, encouraging me to watch them, right from the start of this medley of songs, all of which I thoroughly enjoyed, reminiscing about my own appearences on-stage, both in Ceylon, and later in Australia, unfortunately, without “backing” even CLOSE to what I was watching at the moment. Made me realize that, no matter how good an Artiste you are, without superb backing, you might as well pack up and go home. I have decided to turn this medley from these two great performers into a “Kelly-Klassic” for the benefit of many thousands of e’Lanka Members, encouraging them to watch and enjoy some top-class entertainment, WITHOUT totally unnecessary “Shouting & Screaming” emanating from so-called “Vocalists”. Please watch, listen, and learn the art of entertaining from THEUNS JORDAAN, JUANITA DUPLESSIS – COUNTRY MEDLEY, and I ...
