Thilo Hoffmann:The Saviour of Sinharaja Source:Sundaytimes Informed environmental activism in Sri Lanka owes its beginnings largely to Thilo Hoffmannm, a Swiss national, who made our country his home 69 years ago. His leadership of the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society and the Ceylon Bird Club proved invaluable in launching a crusade that not only saved Sinharaja but also substantially expanded the island’s protected-areas network, opening a new era of civil-society engagement in the management of Sri Lanka’s biodiversity heritage. Invited by his literary agent to recount his life, P. G. Wodehouse was at a loss. “I wrote a book”, he said at length. “Then another… And then another. Just writing one book after another, that’s my life.” Asked to relate his own life story, Thilo Walter Hoffmann (1922-2014) might have responded just as glibly: “I saved a forest. Then another. And then another. And so on.” But it wasn’t as ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – 10 REASONS TO BELIEVE EASTER REALLY HAPPENED – By Charles Schokman Jesus Christ is arguably the central figure of history. This Easter, 2.4 billion people will celebrate his resurrection. But how do we know if Jesus really did rise from the dead? Christians believe Jesus is not merely a dead hero, but God in flesh and the living Saviour. The apostle Paul wrote, “if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith” (1 Corinthians 15:17). Jesus’ resurrection really matters. Consider 10 reasons that Easter is not a legend or a fairy tale, but true history. 1. JESUS REALLY DIED Some have suggested that Jesus merely fell unconscious on the cross and later revived in the tomb. But there is no way he could have survived crucifixion. Rewriting Srilanka history based on scientific findings – By Dr. Gnana Sankaralingam Image Source : tamilnet Mahawamsa which was first written by Bhikku Mahanama, has documented the history of Srilanka since the 3rd century CE. Though the record has been accepted as correct in most instances, there were discrepancies in para-history and proto-history. The concept of origin of Sinhala race as a result of union of a male lion with female human which is not biologically possible, is not acceptable. Also, the narrative regarding Lord Buddha making three unaided flying visits to Srilanka which is not     feasible, is not tenable. This makes the early part of Mahavamsa text prone to be challenged. As for proto-history, Mahawamsa is largely silent. It does not say about the people who inhabited the land and their civilisation. Modern advances have exposed data contrary to entrenched beliefs. It is postulated by geologists that Srilanka had once ...
