What is ‘preventative chemotherapy’ and what are the side effects? By Dr Harold Gunatillake Princess Kate was told she had cancer after undergoing abdominal surgery nine weeks ago at the private London Clinic. Princess Kate revealed the news in a video message, saying the diagnosis was a “huge shock”. Source: Getty / Chris Jackson While the exact situation is difficult to determine because the 42-year-old princess did not disclose the nature of the cancer, here is an explanation of preventative chemo. What is chemotherapy? Chemotherapy is the use of powerful drugs to stop cancerous cells from growing, dividing and creating more cells. There are a large number of kinds of chemotherapy, depending on the cancer, how far it has spread and the treatment regime. Because these treatments cannot distinguish between different cells, they end up killing some cells that do good, such as white blood cells, causing some side effects. Why preventative? Satyagraha – the abused spiritual weapon – By Hemantha Abeywardena Mahatma Gandhi with Jawaharlal Nehru (Image Source: archives.dailynews.lk) Source:- dailynews.lk If you have a penchant for reading, grab a local or regional newspaper from South Asia and you hardly miss this news: a folk switching to fasting mode to fight for his rights – lost, abused or existence of which he was unaware, until he had a brainwave or a lawyer did a wink at him. Source:Slguardian Katchatheevu, a 285-acre uninhabited island in the Palk Strait, between India and Sri Lanka, and about 33 km from the Indian coast, has suddenly become a matter of acrimonious debate in India today, as Indian parliamentary elections will take place in the next few days. Claim on Katchatheevu: There have been claims by both Sri Lanka and India, both of which were under British rule for several centuries, about the ownership of Katchatheevu for a very long time. Finally, a settlement was reached in 1974 when the Government of India agreed that Katchatheevu would be part of Sri Lanka, meaning that India has given up its claim on Katchatheevu. While it was thought that the matter had been settled once and for all, there has been ...
