Two Majestic ‘cameos’ in Cricket from Dhoni and Pathirana-by Michael Roberts Source:Thuppahis Amidst the hot news in Australia relating to the knife-wielding nutcase and his killings at Bondi in Sydney, I watched snatches of the web-reportage on the match between the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Superkings (CSK) in the IPL tournament.  The latter event was high-scoring, topsy-turvy, turbulent and fascinating. In point-form let me highlight some remarkable performances. A: Batting first CSK amassed a reasonable total even though Daryll Mitchell’s faltering innings at the end  slowed them down till he was dismissed in the last over …And then ….. B: Mahendra Singh Dhoni walked in to face the last few balls. Though the match was at Wankhade Stadium in Mumbai, this Indian Maharaja was not deterred; he smacked three huge sixers in the four balls he faced. All hailed His Majesty Dhoni. C: Undeterred, Rohit Sharma (the former captain of the Mumbai team) unfolded ...

The war, known as Yom Kippur War or Ramadan war, inadvertently motivated the United States explore ways and means to reach a status of energy independence; the embargo, in this context, was a blessing in disguise, indeed. Exactly like what it is doing today, the US extended its ‘ironclad’ support to Israel to defend itself from the collective onslaught on the Middle Eastern battle front in 1973. It, however, came at a price – a huge price, to be more accurate. The Arab members of the OPEC, Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, known as OAPEC, ...

The Moonstone Painting – By George Braine One privilege of teaching at the Chinese University of Hong Kong was the health care provided to staff. On my first visit to the campus Health Center, I was intrigued by the large, colorful paintings that hung on both floors of the Center and on the stairwell as well. They were mainly scenes from around the campus, not accurate depictions, whimsical and somewhat childlike. All eye-catchingly colorful, green and blue abounding. I later learned that Dr. Memie Kwok, a physician at the Center, was the artist. Her intention in displaying her paintings may have been to cheer up visitors. Memie was not my doctor, but she was my wife, Fawzia’s. They soon became friends, and I came to know that Memie also kept a popular blogsite, which was filled with detailed descriptions and photos of her world travels. I became an avid reader ...

Mr. Kanakasamy was shot by the police lead by LSSP  stalwarts; Dr. N.M.Perera, Dr. Colvin de Silva and Lesley Gunawardena. The GCSU was  powerful and acted as in the form of real power to demand a prominent powerful upsurge until 1985. It was stated by Nicky Karunaratne, who was based on the LSSP hierarchy. ‘The old left’ liked to look back with heroic nostalgia of the  1953 general strike as the vital event of their, history. A review of the past showed that the old left of the SLFP, which benefitted out ...
