By Dr Harold Gunatillake – Health Writer When we think of metabolism, we think of masticatedfood entering the big bag -the stomach, where it is well churned into a fruit salad with peptic and acid juice, driven into the small gut for further digestion and absorption. The absorbed nutrients are then converted into fuel required for the activities in every cell in the body. This energy production in the body mechanism is referred to as ‘metabolism’. The gut not only is a conduit for passage of food and digestion, but it also participates in preventing the toxic and foreign substances from being absorbed through its efficient immune system. Healthy life and existence primarily depends on this mechanism. The body organ, gut gets accustomed to a certain pattern of home cooked food. Enzymes too get familiar for better action on routine healthy diets. Changing your food pattern even once in a ...

There wasn’t anything in the air than the usual, that morning of a day in 1954 at the Peradeniya University campus. Walking from Ramanathan Hall with some books in hand we were on our way to the lectures. Most of us were just ambling along, hardly walking. I remember this due to a remark made by a senior who breezed past us with better intent. That provoked a remark, by that worthy that I did not look as if I (we) were going in search of the Truth. My feet shuffled just that little. A stiff cool breeze which blew in just then wafted the gibe away and over the trees. I moved on. But only just that further, around the bend, there was something in the air and more on the ground. Some students were collected in groups. All along the Galaha road, from near the turn off to ...

Mr Tassie Seneviratne’s (TS) article in the Sunday Times has directly raised the issue of police performance. More specifically, TS is talking of mal-performance, mis-performance and non-performance of police through failure of supervision. The purpose of this article is to add to TS that failure of performance is simply failure of supervision. The instances highlighted plainly speak to a breakdown of supervision and performance, though each bear closely on the other. Those in the know, for the last 150 years of the Police in this country, the two, supervision and performance, went hand in hand. The 17th Amendment split that apart. The supervisory line was broken into two, the higher ranks and the lower ranks. The Commission (NPC) controlled the higher ranks; the IGP controlled the lower ranks.  Performance fell in between. The Minister and the NPC, even cross traded allegations about police performance. The media reported this prominently and ...

Ketosis is a normal process where excessive ketone bodies formed, a crucial organic compound – acetoacetate, when human body is starved of carbohydrates for energy requirements. Plan B in the body under such strained situations would be to use fatty acids stored in the body as triglycerides to burn its own fat for fuel, for energy requirements in the liver, heart and kidneys, due to the restriction of energy from carbohydrates. The process of ketones production in humans is called ketogenesis. In the brain, they are a vital source of energy during fasting when the body is deprived of carbohydrates. Brain cells would prefer energy from sugars, being much more physiological. So, we have to understand that ketone body formation is a natural event under carbohydrate deprived situation (plan B). ...

Choosing the perfect location in which to purchase your investment property can be daunting. Depending on who you listen to, there are a variety of definitions as to what exactly a hot spot is. Given that there are so many great locations where you can buy property, a question I’m constantly asked is: “Where is the best place to invest?” Being able to predict the market is a skill. Unless you have a crystal ball, no one can predict with absolute certainty what the future will hold. The only thing you can do is to have an educated opinion. This is far better than guesswork or gut feeling. THREE HOT SPOTS TO CONSIDER Here are three examples of locations that are each considered current hot spots. A snapshot of what is happening in each area contributes to why the area is deemed a hot spot. By looking at these areas ...
