Perseverance Delivers Degree & Fulfilment for Tania Murphy nee Van Heer-by Michael Roberts Source:Thuppahis Tania Murphy’s Memo to Michael Roberts in Response to Request** Hope you have had a great week so far! I have enclosed the uni letter. I, however, have already sent you some insights on my athletics journey a few days ago. As for my university experience, I started out wanting to gain a qualification to enable me to secure permanent employment and realised that I had to get a university qualification to enable this to happen. I had put this part of my life on hold because of my commitments to athletics and the traveling that came with it. Later on, when I had a family and put it on hold again and then, one day, I had a conversation in the gym I worked at with another member about her son’s involvement with international development. Prior ...

A Landmark in Ceylon’s Cricket Test History: Beating India in January 1965-by Michael Roberts Source:Thuppahis Nirgunan Tiruchelvam, in ESPNcricinfo in 2013 — 14 August 2013 to be precise — with this heading “When the Lankans won a ‘Test’ in India” Sri Lanka’s rise in Test cricket is one of the finest underdog stories in the game’s history. England have played Test cricket for 126 years, while Sri Lanka have only competed for 31. Yet Sri Lanka has two batsmen with 10,000 Test runs while England have none. Sri Lanka have also produced the game’s highest wicket-taker: Muttiah Muralitharan’s career haul of 800 is more than double the tally of England’s leading bowler (Ian Botham with 383). Sri Lanka have won Tests in England, West Indies, New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa. However, a Test win in India has remained elusive. Their score-line in India is appalling. They have played 17 Tests in India, ...

This will be Sri Lanka’s first three match series in six years. England were the last team to engage in a three match series against Sri Lanka in 2018. Sri Lankan Cricketers beat Zimbabwe with Surprising Ease-by Michael Roberts Source:Thuppahis S. Sudharshanan in ESPNcricinfo, 2 July 2023, with the title “Theekshana, Nissanka hand Sri Lanka ODI World Cup ticket” A clinical bowling performance backed by an unbeaten 101 from Pathum Nissanka helped Sri Lanka register a nine-wicket win in the Super Six clash against Zimbabwe and also confirmed their spot at the ODI World Cup in India later this year. The win was set up by the bowlers, as they orchestrated a batting collapse on either side of a 68-run partnership between Sean Williams and Sikander Raza consigning Zimbabwe to their first loss at the 2023 ODI World Cup Qualifier. Sri Lanka’s new-ball bowling against the Zimbabwe top-order was the play of the day in a clash billed to be between the best batting team and the best bowling team of the tournament. Dilshan Madushanka razed through the top order to leave Zimbabwe reeling inside seven overs. Cricket Pitch Invasions: Contrasting Reactions in Different Times – By Michael Roberts Source : thuppahis If memory serves me right Terry Alderman injured himself when he tackled a lone Aussie pitch-invader on one occasion. Johnny Baisow isa sturdy Yorkshireman and he had no problems carting off …..yes “carting off” …. a slim intruder at the holy-of-holies ground known as “The Lords.” When Terry Aldermand tackled an Aussie intruder at …. he was not as efficient: he injured himself. Both these energetic policing actions stand in contrast to the calm, cool and collected responses of fielders, umpires and batsmen at the Kennington Oval when a bunch of Sri Lankan Tamil protestors (migrants all) rushed onto the grounds in display of their political cause on the 11th June 1975. ph above. The umpires were (are) as calm as can be. So, too, are the Sri Lankan fielders and Aussie batsmen. Indeed, Mevan Pieris ...

Edgbaston. What A Match! Errol’s Armchair Pleasures-by Michael Roberts Source:thuppahis Email Commendation from Errol Fernando in Melbourne, 21 June 2023 Bravo, Captain Pat Cummins! No words of praise are adequate to describe  how Captain Pat, in that final hour, turned certain defeat into victory. And he did it with lots and lots of smiles!  It was good to hear Cummins, in his post-match interview,  acknowledge the crucial support of warrior Nathan Lyon. He also stated that the most important contribution in the  match was made by Usman Khawaja. Best of all, he was gracious and modest in victory. When asked whether this was the ‘Number One’ Test of his whole career he immediately agreed that it was. Obviously he had forgotten the Test match 12 years ago at the Wanderers in Johannesburg  when he made his  debut as a lad of 18   –   the second youngest Australian Test player after Ian Craig.  In that ...

The Colombo Oval or “P Sara” — a historic venue as England search for redemption-by Michael Roberts   Source:Cricketique.live Jonathan Agnew began his podcast with Geoff Boycott on Thursday talking about how romantics were dreaming of an historic England victory. Well if those romantics did not get the result they wished for in the first Test, they should at least be pleased with the venue for the second because the P Sara Stadium is an enchanting location. To give it its full name, the Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu Stadium is the oldest cricket ground in Sri Lanka and is home to the Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club. The ground was famous for having a female curator named Amravati who worked at the P Sara for 40 years. Although she is long retired, her sister Saroja continues to be involved.  It is a little rough around the edges and there is clearly ...

Special Vistas For Tourists in Sri Lanka Today-by Michael Roberts Source:Thuppahis Lee Tulloch, in Sydney Morning Herald, 9 June 2023, where the title reads = “Why you should visit this undersold, teardrop-shaped island right now” If there’s a country that could do with a lot of love right now, it’s Sri Lanka. Over the past three decades, the island nation has been ravaged by conflict and disaster, beginning with the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which claimed 30,000 lives, and the 26-year-long civil war, which ended in 2009. It had just re-emerged as a popular tourist destination when, on Easter Sunday 2019, an Islamic group, in retaliation for the Christchurch attacks thousands of kilometres away, bombed three churches and three luxury hotels in Colombo, unnerving the tourists who had returned in record numbers. ...
