{PeteriteNET:584} DEATH OF THE OLDEST KNOWN PETERITE IN SRI LANKA  Mr. Jaya Peiris or W P Jayaratne as he preferred to call himself, the oldest known Peterite in Sri Lanka, has passed away yesterday. His cremation is to take place today (Saturday, 1st June at 4.30 p.m. – crematorium not identified). Mr. Jayaratne (99) was the oldest Peterite who contributed to our Centenary Publication, in 2022. His article brought back memories of an era at St. Peter’s that many of us were unaware of. I had the privilege of meeting him through Mr. Gerry de Mel, an erstwhile President of our OBU and presenting to him a complimentary copy of the Centenary Publication. A valued certificate issued to him by our first Rector, Rev. Fr. Nicholas Perera, which he shared with us is also published here. Interestingly this certificate is issued in Dehiwela where College was located in 1943 (during ...

The latest blow to the oil and gas markets: Chinese manufacturing sector shrinks again! – By Hemantha Yapa Abeywardena Source: oilfutures In the ascending order of anxiety, the OPEC+ has been forced to accumulate a growing range of bad news in recent times for its decision makers to digest. In this context, the latest manufacturing data from China hardly comes as a catalyst for optimism, as far as the oil cartel is concerned. China’s manufacturing PMI, the key indicator that reflects its production activity, has fallen yet again in May, indicating a significant contraction: it has come down to 49.5 in May, from 50.4 in April; the threshold is 50% and anything below it, is a contraction in the manufacturing sector. The disappointing news from the world’s second largest economy comes in the wake of the OPEC+ holding its meeting, scheduled to be held on June 1 in person, online – ...

Netherlands stump Sri Lanka in T20 Warm-Up-by TrevineRodrigo Source:Thuppahis TrevineRodrigo in eLanka deploying this title:; “Netherlands humble cocky Lankans in warm-up boilover” Sri Lanka made an inauspicious start to their T20 World Cup campaign losing by 21 runs to the Netherlands in the USA in their first warm-up game before the tournament proper.  Obviously thinking too far ahead by being focussed on the real tournament, Sri Lanka let their guard down by resting several key players and paid the price as the underdogs turned tables on them. Skipper Wanindu Hasarsnga was among the players rested from bowling, apart from Maheesh Theekshana and Dushmantha Chameera giving the Dutchmen a fighting chance of countering what was left of a weakened Sri Lankan bowling attack.  They took to it with gusto rattling up 181 for 5 in their allotment. Sri Lanka’s batting then floundered losing the top order in quick succession to be ...
