Athapaththu leads Sri Lanka to clean sweep over West Indies for the first time. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE.  (eLanka Sports Editor) Chamari Athapaththu led Sri Lanka on a run spree to ensure a one-day series clean sweep against the West Indies in Hambantota.  The spirited Sri Lanka skipper has always stood up when the team is vulnerable and this time was no different as she continues to be the team’s guiding light. The win in emphatic fashion, was historic in terms of a series sweep against the West Indies and underlined Sri Lanka’s steady climb in the world rankings taking them to number five behind Australia, England, South Africa and India and raises hope for automatic qualifying for the World Cup. OBITUARY – CHANDRA SENARATNE (9 Feb 1933 – 3 June 2024 ) – By  Hugh Karunanayake The news of Chandra Senaratne ‘s passing came as no surprise to me, as he was not in the best of health recently. Nevetheless, the sadness and the finality it brings to a life well lived, remains so indelibly etched in my memory, and will remain forever. Chandra was a dear friend with whom I have been able to associate closely over the past 30 years.  He is only two years older than I, and it would have surprised him to know that I remember him as a student in Royal College in Colombo, where we both attended, he a couple of forms senior to me. As you all know, a two year seniority in school brings with it a certain aura of respect, and adulation. In Chandra’s case he was (if I remember ...

Brain Draining Pearl – By Nisal Rukshan A state’s economy can significantly influence its population. The economic stability of a country relies on salient factors including, labour, taxation, human resources, income distribution, political status, policies & strategies of the government, education system, usage of technology, the contribution of the state sector and private sector, the trade balance (the difference in country’s imports and exports of goods and services), unemployment, infrastructure, wages, inflation etc. However, in times of economic upheaval or political instability, a country’s development growth can be hindered and such a situation can lead to unrest among citizens. Waves of the depressed population will strive to seek remedies or ask for solutions from authorities to overcome financial difficulties. When such efforts have become futile, the road to struggle will automatically open up. That results in a high rate of brain drain aka substantial emigration among any population. Marshlaw’s hierarchy ...

Afghanistan ‘talibans’ Australian T20 Cricket Aspirations-by Michael Roberts Source:Thuppahis In what must have been a nerve-tingling match-up, the Afghanistan cricket team undermined and shattered Australia’s cricket team at  the T20 match in Kingstown on 22nd June. This was achieved via a team ffort involving several star interventions (as it should be in good cricket). I did not watch the match but the figures reveal that there were several stars — from the big opening stand between Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran when Afghanistan batted first to Naveen Ul-Haq’s 2 for 20 runs in four overs to Mohammad Nabi’s allround feat of 10 runs in  ten balls at the tail-end of their innings and then one wkt for one run — and that was opening bat David Warner — in the only over he bowled. NOTE THESE MOMENTS 14.4 BIG BIG WICKET! Noor Ahmad may not have bowled much, but he may have taken ...

West Indian Women Cricketers trounced by the Sri Lanka Women’s Squad-by Michael Roberts Source:Thuppahis While most cricketing fans may be focusing on the T20 World Cup matches in the Caribbean and USA, the female West Indian cricketers have been ‘holidaying’ in Sri Lanka. Or rather, thus far, they have faced the mighty Sri Lankan ladies in three 50-over matches in the south-eastern corner of the island: at the grounds in Hambantota abutting the wild life park at Yala and a vibrant coastline. Kavisha Dilhari Sachini Nishansala Whether the latter distractions proved to be debilitating, I cannot say. But they have been well and truly ‘distracted’ and rolled over by the Sri Lankan ladies. The summary scorelines of the three matches played thus far are as follows ODI ONE:  SL women won …. after Windies [asked to bat] totalled 193 runs, a target which the hosts secured in 35 overs for the loss of 4 wkts. ...
