Sri Lankan Ambassador to Japan, Rodney M. Perera, recently met P.D. Pasindu Mihiran, a talented young inventor from Sri Lanka, to express his heartfelt congratulations on winning the Platinum and Gold Medals at the Japan Design, Idea, and Invention Expo to bring honour to Sri Lanka, the Foreign Ministry said yesterday.

This special event took place at the Ariake Garden Convention Centre, in Tokyo, from 7th July to 8th July, 2023, with over 320 participants from 25 different countries.

P.D. Pasindu Mihiran, a student from Ananda College, in Colombo, showcased his invention at this Expo, the “Modified Yoghurt Cup to Prevent Spreading of Mosquitoes,” which garnered significant recognition and acclaim as an innovative solution that addresses the global challenge of mosquito-borne diseases by incorporating mosquito control features into a commonly used item.

Mihiran has already participated in various International Innovators conventions and exhibitions to present his unique innovations. Among the accolades he has received are the Special Award presented at the 7th International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada, “iCAN 2022,” held on 27th August, 2022, in Toronto, and a gold medal and a special award presented at the Korea International Youth Olympiad 4I on 6th October, 2019, in Seoul, South Korea.

Ambassador Perera commended Mihiran’s exceptional talent, perseverance, and dedication to innovation, underlining the significance of supporting and encouraging young innovators in Sri Lanka.

The Embassy staff joined Ambassador Perera in felicitating Mihiran on his great achievement. Sujeewa Wijayanayake, a respected Sri Lankan Baseball Umpire in Japan, assisted Mihiran on his visit to Japan, which was funded by the Ananda College OBA.
