OBITUARY : JEHAN RAHEEM – By Hugh Karunanayake JEHAN  RAHEEM  (19. 6. 1935 – 25.10.2023) Jehan Raheem, my  classmate through Royal Prep School and thereafter in Royal College,, and an outstanding  intellect, passed away in his home in New York, yesterday. His demise was mistakenly announced a week ago, but the end was near, and he finally  succumbed to the ravages of cancer in the morning of 25 October. A man given to a wry sense of humour, would have been thinking on the lines of Mark Twain on the unintended falsity, by exclaiming that “rumours of my death are vastly exaggerated”! Born in Hulftsdorf where his father enjoyed a lucrative practice as a lawyer, Jehan was the eldest of nine children, all high achievers, with Jehan the eldest showing the way to his younger siblings. . Of portly build, he was a friendly and genial person very popular with ...

Source:Dailymirror With late General Denzil Kobbekaduwa at the Base Hospital Palali 1990 “Knife before the wife is his mission statement”, says his wife after I sat for tea at the end of the quarterly meeting of the Colombo Chapter of Ceylon Society of Australia (CSA), held last Thursday (24) at the Organization of Professional Associations (OPA). Consultant Surgeon Dr. Gamini Goonetilleke was the guest speaker at the meeting, the only person who crossed borders from the South to enter the LTTE-controlled territory in the North to work at the General Hospital, Jaffna for short periods; and also to teach and examine students of the Faculty of Medicine, Jaffna. Dr. Gamini has authored two books, “In the Line of Duty” and “The Extra Mile”. Dr Gamini Goonetilleke ...

Celebrating 25 Years of Multi-Ethnic Conviviality: Old School Sri Lankans in Australia-By Michael Roberts Adam Raffel, whose chosen title reads “The Ceylon Society of Australia 25th Aniversary Celebrations” The Ceylon Society of Australia (CSA) held its 25th Anniversary celebrations on 28 August 2022 at the Pennant Hills Community Centre. The hall was decorated with balloons and banners celebrating 25 years of the CSA. All this was the tireless handiwork of Pauline Gunewardene, the President of the CSA, with the able assistance of all members of the CSA Committee. There were approximately 80 people in attendance. Pauline presided over the formal proceedings. She highlighted the achievements of the CSA during its 25-year existence, acknowledging the contributions of all former CSA Presidents. A special mention was made of dearly departed CSA Past Presidents Tony Peries and Sunil de Silva, who served the Society with distinction and were affectionately re- membered by all attendees. ...

You are invited, to join us for an evening of friendship, tea, food, and an entertaining talk…. CEYLON SOCIETY OF AUSTRALIA MELBOURNE CHAPTER At our next meeting Prof Anoma Pieris will present an illustrated talk on “Mrs. B, BMICH and the Non-Aligned Summit Architecture” The fifth Non-Aligned Movement summit in Colombo hosted by Sirimavo Bandaranaike’s 1970-77 government was a spectacular international event, unlike any other held previously in the city, not for its pomp and ceremony, but for its anti-imperialist politics, its call for nuclear disarmament and, above all, its delegates, leaders of newly decolonised nations seeking ‘Third World Solidarity’. Indira Gandhi, Anwar Sadat, Muammar Gaddafi, Cardinal Marcos, and others, glided by in two-toned maroon-and-cream Holden Statesman sedans, and Josip Broz Tito in his six-door Mercedes Benz limousine, cheered on by waiting crowds. Dignitaries were accommodated in American-designed multinational hotels completed during the 1970s, and the host venue for the ...

OBITUARY IINEZ SOURJAH (6-10-1929- 8-9-2021) by Hugh Karunanayake It is with much sadness that I refer to the death of a dear friend, CSA member Inez Sourjah who  passed away in her sleep in the afternoon of 8 Septmber 2021. Inez was the dearly beloved wife of the late Dr Robert Sourjah who passed away last year. She was the mother of Rohan and Lalin. Rohan is of course the founding Hony Secretary of the Ceylon Society of Australia, a foundation member, who has rendered yeoman service in the formation of the Society nearly 25 years ago. I recall the pre-foundation dinners that were hosted by a small coterie of friends and fellow travellers in pursuit of memories and links with an almost forgotten country then called Ceylon. Rohan and his wife Deanne  hosted the third such dinner. Those get- togethers were to herald the formation of what is now known ...
