Background

The AIIA Sri Lank Study Tour 2016
Following the Australian Government’s effective engagement with the now, year and half old Sri Lankan government, particularly in this era of greater global positioning and development in a post conflict era, Sri Lanka was chosen as the destination for the AIIAV’s Study Tour in 2016. In past years, we have had Study Tours to East Timor, Myanmar, China and Vietnam and have a potential tour to Iran in the making as well.

The outcomes of the Study Tour while providing an enriching experience of Sri Lanka for the 20-member delegation (consisting of Australians from diverse backgrounds), will be the publication of a report: an independent analysis of the social, political, economic and cultural aspects of Sri Lanka today.

This report and the proposed event aims to be catalyst for greater ties between the two nations in the think tank space and linking in with the Sri Lankan diaspora in Australia and greater understanding of this wonderful nation in the Australian community as well.

The Australian Institute of International Affairs Victoria

Australia Sri Lanka Council
The Australia Sri Lanka Council (ASLC) is a professional body with a mission to promote relations in trade, investment, tourism, culture education and sport between Australia and Sri Lanka. It was established in 1994 on the direct initiative of the Honorary Consul for Sri Lanka in Victoria, Dr. Rodney Arambewela. On its formation, it was endorsed by the governments of Australia and Sri Lanka through their respective High Commissioners in Canberra and Colombo.

We are a private and independent organisation free of ethnic, business or political ties that works with Government Departments of both Sri Lanka and Australia to accomplish its primary goal of promoting the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

In Australia, we have worked with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra, the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Austrade in Melbourne, the Australian Institute of International Affairs (AIIA) in Melbourne, and the Monash Asia Institute/National Centre for South Asian Studies in the Monash University Caulfield Campus.

Similarly, in Sri Lanka we have close ties with the External Affairs Ministry of Sri Lanka in Colombo, the Principal Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Sri Lanka, the Board of Investment in Sri Lanka, Austrade in Colombo and the Australia New Zealand Business Council in Colombo, with whom we have a long-standing MOU. In addition, several Australian companies have played a pivotal role to develop trade between the two countries.

Since the Councils inception in 1994 we have played a major role in promoting bilateral relations especially in trade and investment between Australia and Sri Lanka. Our work has focused on hosting trade delegations, ministerial visits, investment seminars and trade fairs, and supporting mutually beneficial initiatives in areas such as medicine and tourism.
