This mysterious, horror-tinged story follows three men in Sri Lanka – a Buddhist monk, an organ dealer, and a surgeon – whose lives are linked by their proximity to death.

Writer-director Vimukthi Jayasundara (Between Two Worlds, SFF 2010) is no stranger to incorporating spirituality and mysticism into his films as he explores the recent history of Sri Lanka. His latest is a Jekyll and Hyde-like story of a surgeon who treats patients during the day, but is a serial rapist at night. This disturbing central narrative is contrasted with two other stories: one about a novice Buddhist monk seeking enlightenment, the other about a shady organ trafficker. The lives of these three disparate characters intersect in mysterious and unexpected ways, in Jayasundara’s eerie and disturbing film. A dark allegory, Dark in the White Light contains unsettling images, and is not for sensitive audiences.
